Google Ads, Microsoft Advertising and Pay-Per-Click

Google Ads (formerly Google AdWords) and Microsoft Advertising remain the two largest pay-per-click (PPC) advertising platforms, where advertisers pay for each click on an ad that appears alongside search results. Because money changes hands on every click, small changes in how these platforms report data, handle support or match keywords can have a direct cost for advertisers.

This hub collects my coverage of paid search from the early pay-per-click search engines through the current Google Ads platform. It includes keyword tool changes, redirects and tracking issues, support problems, the long-running question of whether ads influence organic rankings, and industry news on PPC tools and agencies. Several of these topics have also come up in my expert witness work, where the details of conversion tracking, click quality and campaign settings often decide what actually happened to an advertiser’s budget.
