NamesCon 2014: Carolyn Goodman, Mayor, City of Las Vegas

Posted on January 14, 2014 Written by Bill Hartzer

Carolyn Goodman, Mayor of the City of Las Vegas

We are a world class city, she came here in 1964 from the East Coast with here husband and she has been here 50 years. It was the gambling meca, with the best entertainment. She came here and there were 100,000 and now there were 40 million tourists here last year. Lots of people come for shopping and for the gaming. Gaming is everywhere, and Las Vegas is the number one tourist and convention destination.

This hotel only 10 minutes from the airport. If you go to another city, it’s an hour from airport to the hotels. We are known for the Vegas brand name. it has been a really tough time since 2008 with gambling going worldwide. Nevada is a state that is going to help develop the drone industry.

The rest of the country is in the cold and it’s 68 degrees here.

There is no personal income tax. There is no business corporate tax. There is no estate tax here. A wonderful place to retire.

Las Vegas has to put forth an effort to help diversify the economy. She has gone to a lot of other tourism markets. The other countries are wanting to get the word out and they want to know about Las Vegas.

The mayor is really excited about dot vegas. www.vegas and they want it to be a hub. It’s great to be a tech hub, and they are allowing film industry tax credits. The film industry is going to Sacramento, it’s no longer in San Diego, and Las Vegas wants all the film industry business. To be .Vegas and have that opportunity, it’s a grand time to have all the marketing opportunity.

Of course we have the Las Vegas strip. Back when she came, all the hotels were privately owned. Lots of organized crime, but they also only killed each other. Howard Hughes came in and they cleaned up Las Vegas. They still concentrate on their hospitality.

They have so much going on downtown, the Smith Center for the Performing Arts, Children’s museum. Leading discount shopping outlets are downtown. Brand new city hall, wonderful hotels that have been renovated. Great new taverns.

Nevada selected for drone technology, and excited about Zappos and Switch.

She welcomes us and every day is a new day. Every day is a think out of the box and look what we can do day.

Welcome to fabulous Las Vegas.
