Forget Astronauts and Firefighters: UK Kids Now Dream of Becoming Social Media Stars

Posted on April 17, 2024 Written by Bill Hartzer

In a striking shift from traditional aspirations, UK children are now setting their sights on becoming social media influencers, ranking it among their top career choices. This revelation comes from a recent study conducted by nimbl, a popular pocket money card and app, which surveyed young Brits aged 6 to 17 about their dream jobs.

While classic professions like teaching, medicine, and veterinary science continue to hold the top spots, the role of a social media influencer has made a surprising ascent to sixth place on the list. About one in twenty children expressed a desire to emulate icons such as KSI and Zoe Sugg, turning their personal charisma and digital savvy into lucrative careers.

The study indicates a significant cultural shift influenced by platforms such as Instagram, TikTok, and YouTube, where young stars can share content, engage with millions globally, and earn through sponsorships and ads. With Instagrammers able to start monetizing their online presence once they hit a few thousand followers, the allure of becoming an influencer is palpable.

The top ten dream jobs, as identified in nimbl’s study, are as follows:

  1. Teacher (6.5%)
  2. Doctor (6.4%)
  3. Vet / Scientist (tied at 5.7% each)
  4. Athlete (5.1%)
  5. Social Media Influencer (4.6%)
  6. Police Officer (4.2%)
  7. Actor (3.9%)
  8. Musician (2.5%)
  9. Chef (2.45%)

Alana Parsons, Chief Executive of nimbl, highlighted the profound impact of social media on children’s career ambitions. “Social media isn’t just a platform for connection and entertainment; it’s a burgeoning industry that’s shaping the career aspirations of the next generation,” she commented. “Influencers, through their visibility and success, are demonstrating that digital creativity and entrepreneurial spirit can pave new paths to success.”

While this shift might concern some parents, it’s crucial to recognize the dedication behind the glitz of social media stardom. The traits that many successful influencers exhibit—perseverance, creativity, and strategic thinking—are valuable skills that young people can apply in numerous aspects of life.

As the digital landscape continues to evolve, so too do the aspirations of young people, with the influencer career path offering a blend of fame, creativity, and potentially, financial success. For educators and career advisors, the challenge will be to guide this new wave of digital natives toward fulfilling and sustainable careers in the ever-expanding realm of social media.
