GoDaddy Sent Erroneous Credit Notices via Email

The domain name registrar GoDaddy sent emails to some current customers. The email, which was a legitimate email and not a phishing attempt, told the customer that they had a credit on their account. However, what is alarming is that the email being sent had the wrong amount.

In one case, Chris Silver Smith posted on Twitter that he received an email from GoDaddy. The amount of the credit in the email says he has a credit on his account of $999.00. That’s nine hundred and ninety nine US dollars. See his screen capture below.

However, when he logged into his account at GoDaddy, the credit was actually for only $9.99, a mere ten dollars for a domain name backorder.

Others have also reported this same issue. It appears that the decimal was in the wrong place on emails that were sent out.

In another case, an email went to a GoDaddy customer David Cross, who was told he had a $1998 credit (nearly two thousand dollars) in his GoDaddy account. The actual credit was for $19.98 (twenty US dollars).

It appears that GoDaddy has corrected this issue.

GoDaddy’s Twitter account responded to some of the Tweets, saying, “Apologies for any confusion. The notification emailed out was sent in error. We’re already working to correct this as well as the error accessing the billing section of your account. We appreciate your patience as we work to get this resolved as quickly as possible.”

If you receive an email, even from a company that you regularly do business with, and it looks like it’s too good to be true, then it probably is. In this case it was too good to be true for some GoDaddy customers.
