Project Liberty’s Game-Changing Bid to Save TikTok

Posted on January 9, 2025 Written by Bill Hartzer

Project Liberty has officially submitted a proposal to ByteDance to acquire TikTok’s U.S. operations, presenting a vision that aims to reshape the social media landscape. This ambitious bid, led by Project Liberty Founder Frank McCourt, promises to transition TikTok onto a new, American-developed digital infrastructure that prioritizes user control and data privacy.

“Our proposal to ByteDance is about realizing a reimagined TikTok that serves the people,” McCourt stated. “By building on an American tech foundation, we can keep TikTok thriving without relying on its current algorithm and avoid a ban. We’re ready to work with ByteDance and the incoming administration to make this a reality.”

A New Era for TikTok Users

The proposed acquisition aims to preserve TikTok’s vibrant community of 170 million American users while giving them greater control over their data. Project Liberty’s plan involves migrating TikTok’s user base to a new infrastructure designed to enhance privacy and trust, minimizing disruptions for users and maintaining the platform’s core experience.

Backed by Strong Financial and Community Support

Project Liberty’s bid is reinforced by substantial financial backing and community support. With commitments from major private equity funds, family offices, high-net-worth individuals, and debt financing from a leading U.S. bank, the financial muscle behind the bid is undeniable. TikTok creators have also voiced their enthusiasm for a platform where they can have more control over their data and content.

“This is the bid that can save TikTok,” said Kevin O’Leary, Chairman of O’Leary Ventures and a partner in The People’s Bid. “Frank McCourt and Project Liberty have assembled the right team and vision to ensure TikTok’s future. It’s a win for all Americans.”

A Coalition for Change

The People’s Bid for TikTok represents a broad coalition of technologists, investors, community leaders, business owners, creators, and everyday citizens. This collective effort seeks to give Americans a voice and stake in the platform’s future, ensuring that TikTok remains a cornerstone of digital culture while aligning with U.S. policy goals.

Tomicah Tillemann, President of Project Liberty, emphasized the strategic fit: “We have the technology, resources, and team to complete this deal and protect TikTok’s cultural significance. Our bid offers ByteDance a fair alternative while securing a bright future for TikTok’s users and creators.”

Moving Forward

As ByteDance reviews the proposal, Project Liberty’s team is optimistic about reaching an agreement that satisfies all parties involved. The bid not only aims to keep TikTok operational but also to enhance its role as a platform that champions user data rights and privacy.
