comScore Says Google Leads Internet in Brazil and India

Posted on September 15, 2009 Written by Bill Hartzer

comScore logocomScore, Inc. (NASDAQ: SCOR) has recently released a study that focused on Google’s dominance in two emerging Internet markets: Brazil and India.

comScore reports that Google’s web sites ranked “as the most visited Internet property worldwide with 854 million unique visitors age 15 and older in July, an increase of 18-percent during the past year.” They say that about seventy five percent of all Internet users globally visited one of Google’s web sites at least once last year. Overall, worldwide, just over 9 percent of time spent online is on a Google-owned website.

Even though Google seems to dominate the search market, Internet users tend to use Google in more in some markets than in other markets. In comparison, Internet users in Brazil and in India seem to be more obsessed with Google than in other markets. In July, 2009, 29.8 percent of the total time spent online in Brazil was on a Google-owned website.

In India, Internet users tend to spend about 28.9 percent of their total online time at a Google-owned web site. In comparison, the only other location where Internet users are even close to those numbers is in Ireland: Irish Internet users spend about 16 percent of their online time on a Google-owned web site.

Here are the actual numbers from comScore:

In India, Google Sites accounted for 88.4 percent of all searches conducted, and had commanding share of time spent in social networking with Orkut (68.2 percent), maps with Google Maps (63.9 percent), multimedia with YouTube (82.8 percent).
