Google Teams Up with NC Community Colleges to Revolutionize Career Training

Posted on November 15, 2024 Written by Bill Hartzer

North Carolina Community College System

The North Carolina Community College System (NCCCS) is making waves in the education world by teaming up with Google to roll out no-cost AI and tech training programs across all 58 of its colleges. The partnership brings a golden opportunity for students to gain cutting-edge credentials in some of today’s most sought-after industries, including cybersecurity, data analytics, and digital marketing.

The initiative introduces Google Career Certificates and specialized AI courses like AI Essentials and Prompting Essentials. The best part? No prior experience is needed to enroll, ensuring accessibility for learners from all walks of life.

“This partnership with Google solidifies our commitment to equipping North Carolinians with skills that align with workforce needs,” said Dr. Jeff Cox, NCCCS President. “We’re empowering students to access opportunities that fuel personal growth and boost our economy.”

Credentials That Count

Google’s Career Certificates aim to fast-track learners into high-demand roles in IT support, UX design, project management, and beyond. These programs are rigorous, with over 150 assessments and quizzes designed by Google experts. Graduates also gain access to a treasure trove of career resources and a network of over 150 companies—including giants like Lowe’s and Wells Fargo—that prioritize hiring certificate holders.

To sweeten the deal, students can gain practical AI knowledge tailored to their field. For those wanting a broader understanding, Google’s AI courses pack powerful insights into under 10 hours, offering tips for generative AI tools applicable across industries.

Impact Beyond the Classroom

The certificates have already shown remarkable results nationwide. Since 2018, over 250,000 U.S. graduates have reported benefits such as higher pay, job promotions, or entirely new careers within six months of completing the program. The inclusivity of the initiative is also notable, with 55% of participants identifying as Asian, Black, or Latino.

Lisa Gevelber, Founder of Grow with Google, emphasized the program’s broader mission: “Every student deserves a shot at thriving in the workforce. This partnership ensures North Carolina’s students can access these resources locally and land well-paying jobs in their communities.”

Why It Matters

This initiative reflects NCCCS’s dedication to bridging skill gaps while keeping pace with industry demands. “The Google partnership is another example of how we’re equipping students with high-caliber credentials in careers that matter,” noted Dr. Brian S. Merritt, Senior Vice President and Chief Academic Officer.

Beyond the individual impact, the program has the potential to supercharge the state’s workforce, bolstering North Carolina’s position in the competitive tech-driven economy.

NCCCS operates with a vision to make high-quality education accessible to all North Carolinians, paving pathways to employment. Meanwhile, Grow with Google has empowered millions across the U.S. with the tools to transform their careers since its launch in 2017.

This partnership isn’t just about credentials—it’s about opening doors, fostering innovation, and shaping futures.
