Costa Rica Makes History! The First Country to Use AI for Nation Branding

Posted on October 29, 2024 Written by Bill Hartzer

essential COSTA RICA

Costa Rica is making waves once again, this time by pioneering a new path in nation branding. The country has just launched its 2035 vision for the essential COSTA RICA brand, using artificial intelligence to redefine its national image. In a bold move, Costa Rica has partnered with Bloom Consulting, marking the first time any nation has deployed AI in crafting a national branding strategy. And they’ve got big plans.

Ten years after the original launch of essential COSTA RICA, the nation’s focus on innovation has now led to a groundbreaking AI-driven strategy aimed at positioning Costa Rica as a global leader in sustainability and environmental stewardship by 2035. Costa Rica isn’t just talking the talk; it’s stepping up as the green champion the world needs right now.

How Costa Rica Leveraged AI to Chart a New Course

Costa Rica didn’t leave any stone unturned in building its 2035 strategy. Working closely with Bloom Consulting, the essential COSTA RICA team poured through four distinct layers of information to get a complete picture. First, they reviewed previous studies on Costa Rica’s national brand perception. Then they combed through critical national documents like the decarbonization plan. To keep an eye on the future, they analyzed global reports on trends from sources like the OECD and Sitra Megatrends. Lastly, they connected with local leaders across sectors to get their insights.

This data was then funneled into an AI platform, where it was dissected to reveal key trends, global sentiments, and emerging opportunities for Costa Rica’s brand. The AI analysis didn’t just tell Costa Rica what the world thinks about it now; it also forecasted how Costa Rica could be perceived in the future. These insights allowed Costa Rica to identify key opportunities to strengthen its image in the eyes of the global community.

Climate Change Takes Center Stage

After the AI deep dive, Costa Rican leaders gathered to discuss the findings, and one theme was unmistakably clear: climate change. This theme isn’t just timely; it’s deeply rooted in Costa Rica’s own national ethos. As Adriana Acosta, Director of essential COSTA RICA, shared, “This roadmap will lead us to establish the positioning of Costa Rica as the world leader in sustainability and the fight against climate change.” The 2035 Strategy aims to make Costa Rica synonymous with climate action on the world stage.

Benefits of Using AI in Nation Branding

By employing AI, Costa Rica gained several advantages that traditional methods couldn’t provide:

  • Efficiency: Processing data from multiple sources allowed Costa Rica to get a comprehensive understanding of its brand in record time.
  • Deeper Insights: AI picked up on subtle trends and patterns, offering a more nuanced view of the global perception of Costa Rica.
  • Future-Ready Scenarios: AI allowed Costa Rica to map out potential scenarios based on a variety of factors, enabling it to prepare for diverse futures.
  • Predictive Models: Using global trends, Costa Rica could anticipate how its brand might be perceived in years to come.

This AI-backed strategy allows Costa Rica to stay ahead of the curve and, more importantly, shape its narrative actively rather than reactively.

A New Era for essential COSTA RICA

The final piece of the strategy? Spreading the message. Costa Rica is now working with private sector partners to embed sustainability practices and climate-forward actions into their business strategies. The country’s Nation Brand licensing program is also getting a facelift to align with the 2035 vision. And through workshops, campaigns, and youth training programs, Costa Rica is grooming a new generation to carry the torch of environmental advocacy.

Paving the Way for Global Influence

As José Felipe Torres, Bloom Consulting’s Global Director of Nation and Place Branding, put it, “Costa Rica is leading the way in nation branding.” Costa Rica has always been a trendsetter in sustainability, but with this AI-driven strategy, the country is cementing its reputation as a global leader in the fight for climate change.

The message is clear: Costa Rica isn’t just adapting to the future; it’s building it. And now, with AI by its side, the country is more prepared than ever to showcase its strengths, celebrate its values, and inspire the world to follow suit.
