Google Just Confirmed What SEOs Feared: AI Answers Are Changing Search Faster Than Anyone Expected

Posted on July 22, 2026 Written by Bill Hartzer

seo essex report

For years, SEO professionals have focused on rankings, clicks, and traffic. Google’s AI-generated answers are forcing a different conversation.

A new analysis from SEO Essex suggests that the real battle is shifting from ranking in the top 10 results to being cited inside Google’s AI-generated summaries. The timing matters. Google search activity is climbing to record levels, even as traditional organic clicks are becoming harder to earn.

That sounds contradictory at first. More searches should mean more traffic, right? Not anymore.

The analysis combines public data from Pew Research Center, the Interactive Advertising Bureau (IAB), the U.S. Chamber of Commerce Technology Engagement Center, and Alphabet’s Q1 2026 earnings call. The takeaway is hard to ignore: 73% of marketers are already creating content with AI-generated answers in mind.

That is not a fringe tactic anymore. It is becoming the default.

Google Searches Are Up, But Clicks Are Down

Alphabet reported that Google Search advertising revenue grew 19% year over year in Q1 2026. The company linked much of that growth to increased query volume and AI features such as AI Overviews and AI Mode.

So people are searching more often. The problem is what happens next.

Pew Research found that when an AI summary appears at the top of a Google results page, users click traditional organic listings only 8% of the time. When no AI summary appears, that number is 15%.

That is nearly a 50% drop in click-through rate.

Even the links inside the AI summary are rarely clicked. Pew found those received clicks in only about 1% of visits.

Here is the bigger surprise: many users stop searching entirely after reading the AI-generated answer. Session abandonment occurred on 26% of pages with an AI summary, compared with 16% on traditional search result pages.

In plain English, Google is increasingly answering the question before the user reaches a website.

For local businesses, that changes the math. A plumber, dentist, attorney, or restaurant may still appear in search results, but fewer searchers are visiting the site.

Traditional SEO Metrics Are Becoming Less Reliable

Many businesses still judge SEO success by:

  • Organic traffic
  • Page views
  • Click-through rate
  • Time on site

Those metrics were useful when Google acted mainly as a directory. AI Overviews make Google act more like an answer engine.

SEO Essex argues that local businesses are beginning to focus on different signals:

  • Brand mentions
  • Direct phone calls
  • Form submissions
  • Being referenced in AI-generated answers

I have been saying for a while that rankings alone are becoming a vanity metric. This data adds weight to that argument. A #1 ranking that receives half the clicks it used to is not the same asset it was two years ago.

Why AI Overviews Change the Entire Search Funnel

Google is not showing AI summaries only for obscure technical queries. Pew found that about 18% of all searches trigger an AI-generated summary.

Question-based searches are affected far more heavily. Roughly 60% of queries beginning with words such as “who,” “what,” “when,” “where,” “why,” or “how” generate an AI answer.

Think about how people search for local services:

  • “What is the best roofing company in Denver?”
  • “How much does a DUI lawyer cost?”
  • “Who repairs iPhones near me?”
  • “Why is my AC blowing warm air?”

Those are exactly the types of queries most likely to trigger AI-generated responses.

The implication is huge. Businesses are no longer competing only for a blue link. They are competing to become the source that Google’s AI summarizes.

The Rise of Conversational Search

Search queries are becoming longer and more specific.

Instead of typing “Denver DUI lawyer,” users increasingly ask:

“Who is a good DUI lawyer in Denver for a first-time offense?”

Instead of “water heater repair,” they ask:

“Can a leaking water heater be repaired or does it need to be replaced?”

AI systems thrive on natural language. Businesses that publish clear answers to real customer questions are more likely to be cited.

That requires a different content strategy:

  • Use complete sentences.
  • Answer the question directly.
  • Include pricing ranges when possible.
  • List service areas clearly.
  • Use structured data markup.

Content written only to repeat keywords often performs poorly in AI-generated summaries.

Small Businesses Are Adopting AI Faster Than Expected

This is not just a marketing-agency trend.

The U.S. Chamber of Commerce Technology Engagement Center surveyed 3,870 small businesses and found that 58% are actively using generative AI in 2025.

That is a dramatic jump:

Year AI Adoption Rate
2023 23%
2024 40%
2025 58%

Businesses are using AI for:

  • Content creation
  • SEO audits
  • Review management
  • Customer support
  • Data organization

The interesting part is not the content generation. It is the data organization.

Smart local businesses are making sure that hours, addresses, services, pricing, and locations are presented in ways that search engines and AI systems can easily parse.

That sounds boring. It is also where a lot of competitive advantage is hiding.

Marketers Are Shifting Budgets Toward AI Visibility

The IAB’s 2026 Outlook Study surveyed more than 200 brand and agency buyers.

Artificial intelligence dominated the list of increased marketing priorities. Five of the six fastest-growing investment areas were directly tied to AI.

The headline number: 73% of marketers now prioritize content intended to be cited in AI-generated answers.

That represents a major resource shift.

Old SEO Playbook

  • Find high-volume keywords.
  • Create pages targeting those keywords.
  • Build links.
  • Track rankings.

New AI-Focused Playbook

  • Identify the questions customers ask.
  • Create authoritative answers.
  • Structure information clearly.
  • Use entity-based SEO.
  • Add schema markup.
  • Ensure consistency across the web.

The industry has started calling this Generative Engine Optimization (GEO).

What Is Generative Engine Optimization (GEO)?

GEO is the practice of making content easy for large language models to interpret, trust, and cite.

That includes:

  • Clear factual statements.
  • Consistent business information.
  • Structured data markup.
  • Author expertise signals.
  • Well-organized content.
  • Direct answers to user questions.

Think of it as SEO for AI systems rather than SEO for a list of blue links.

Google is not the only target. GEO also affects visibility in:

  • ChatGPT
  • Gemini
  • Claude
  • Perplexity
  • Microsoft Copilot

That is an important distinction. Businesses are now being discovered through multiple AI interfaces, not just Google search.

Three Takeaways for Local Businesses

1. AI Visibility Now Rivals Traditional Rankings

If an AI Overview appears, organic click-through rates can fall from 15% to 8%. Being excluded from the AI summary may matter as much as ranking below a competitor.

2. Content Must Be Machine-Readable

AI systems reward:

  • Clear headings.
  • Direct answers.
  • Specific facts.
  • Consistent entity information.
  • Structured data.

Ambiguous marketing copy is harder for AI systems to use.

3. The Opportunity Has Shifted, Not Disappeared

Search activity is increasing. Consumers are still looking for local businesses. The difference is that AI systems are increasingly acting as the gatekeeper.

Businesses that become reliable data sources can gain visibility across both traditional search results and AI-generated answers.

Why This Matters More Than the Hype Cycle

Every new technology arrives with exaggerated claims. AI search is different because Google is already deploying it at scale.

The data in the SEO Essex analysis comes from public sources, not a vendor survey trying to sell a new service.

What stood out to me was not the 73% marketer statistic. Marketers chase trends all the time.

The more important signal is that Google query volume is hitting record highs at the same moment that traditional organic clicks are shrinking. That means search is not dying. The path from search to website is being rerouted.

For local businesses, the practical response is surprisingly straightforward: publish accurate information, answer customer questions directly, use structured data, and make sure AI systems can identify who you are, what you do, and where you operate.

SEO Essex may have released the analysis, but the underlying message is much broader. The future of search is no longer just about being found. It is about being cited.
