Yubo’s New AI Tool, SafeBlur, Blocks Harmful Content in DMs

Posted on November 1, 2024 Written by Bill Hartzer

Yubo

Yubo has unveiled its latest tool, SafeBlur, a feature aimed at protecting users from inappropriate content in direct messages. SafeBlur, powered by AI, automatically identifies and blocks harmful images and messages, offering a much-needed shield for Yubo’s 80 million Gen Z users worldwide.

Yubo, known for its social discovery features popular with young people, has long prioritized safety. This latest initiative emerged from direct user feedback, with many indicating a desire for increased control over direct messaging interactions. SafeBlur, now available in the U.S., Canada, the U.K., and Australia, is Yubo’s answer to these requests and a critical step in protecting users’ privacy while maintaining platform security.

Key Features That Make SafeBlur Stand Out

SafeBlur uses advanced AI to scan and blur harmful content in real-time within direct messages. This feature works in the background, allowing users to continue their conversations without the hassle of manually filtering unwanted content. It’s a step up from Yubo’s existing Muted Words function, which requires users to select specific terms. Here, SafeBlur works automatically, detecting and obscuring inappropriate content immediately.

However, Yubo has also ensured that users retain control over their experience. An opt-out option allows users to choose the level of filtering they prefer for their private conversations, adding flexibility without compromising on safety.

Additionally, SafeBlur includes a user-reporting tool, letting users quickly flag any concerning interactions for Yubo’s Safety Specialists. This creates an effective feedback loop, supporting content moderation across the platform. As reports are filed, Yubo’s moderation team can act swiftly to uphold the app’s Community Guidelines and reinforce its commitment to a safer online space.

Why SafeBlur Matters in Private Messaging

Unlike public group chats or livestreams, DMs often lack broader audience oversight, making them riskier spaces for harassment or inappropriate behavior. Yubo recognized this need, especially after a user survey revealed a significant interest across ages and genders in tools that could moderate private interactions more effectively. With SafeBlur, Yubo closes the gap by bringing the same level of scrutiny seen in public interactions into private conversations.

In a statement, Yubo co-founder and CEO Sacha Laizmi emphasized the importance of the feature, saying, “SafeBlur represents our ongoing commitment to safety. We’re addressing the specific challenges of private interactions, offering a solution that respects user privacy while keeping the experience safe.”

What’s Next for SafeBlur

Yubo’s team is committed to evaluating SafeBlur’s impact, gathering user feedback to make ongoing improvements. This will ensure that SafeBlur adapts to the platform’s global user base—spanning over 140 countries and multiple languages. As SafeBlur continues to roll out, Yubo aims to keep its safety measures at the forefront of online protection technology.

With SafeBlur, Yubo is putting the power back into users’ hands. The company’s proactive stance sets a high bar for other platforms in the industry, showing that safety doesn’t have to come at the cost of user freedom or privacy.
