Com Laude Acquires FairWinds Ahead of 2026 DotBrand Surge

Com Laude, a leading global provider of domain name services, has announced its acquisition of FairWinds Partners. The move signals preparation for what Com Laude describes as “the biggest change to the internet since 2012.” With ICANN’s new application window for dotBrand domains set to open in April 2026, this acquisition positions Com Laude to capture significant market demand.

A Strategic Move Before the 2026 Round

DotBrand top-level domains (TLDs) are exclusive digital identifiers operated by brand owners. Unlike generic domains such as .com, which anyone can register, dotBrands are tightly controlled. They create a secure environment where consumers know that the domain belongs directly to the brand. Nike with .nike and Sky with .sky are well-known examples from the 2012 application round.

Back in 2012, ICANN launched the first large-scale expansion of the Internet’s naming system, allowing companies, organizations, and even cities to apply for their own TLDs. More than 1,900 applications were submitted during that window, with nearly 600 coming from brand owners. While not every company put their new domains into wide use, the round marked a turning point in how businesses thought about digital identity. For the first time, brands could move beyond the constraints of .com, .net, and .org.

How DotBrands Have Been Used Since 2012

Nike and the Shift to a Controlled Digital Space

Nike used its .nike TLD to establish swoosh.nike, a site built around its digital community. The strategy allowed Nike to build a branded online hub without relying on traditional generic domains. For consumers, seeing “.nike” at the end of a web address creates instant trust—it can’t be spoofed or misused by scammers. This approach also gives Nike long-term flexibility to launch new campaigns, apps, or platforms under its own trusted namespace.

Sky’s Consistent Brand Presentation

Sky, the European media and telecommunications company, has used its .sky TLD to unify brand presence. With addresses like skygroup.sky, the company presents a consistent message across its subsidiaries and markets. For Sky, the value lies in both security and simplicity—consumers quickly recognize an authentic Sky property without second-guessing the domain extension.

Other Early Adopters

Several other major brands from banking, automotive, and technology adopted dotBrands as well. While some rolled out large-scale digital strategies, others kept their new TLDs in reserve for defensive protection. The common theme across industries was clear: control. By owning a dotBrand, companies took control of their namespace, removed reliance on third parties, and minimized exposure to phishing and counterfeit websites.

Com Laude and FairWinds: A Combined Legacy

Headquartered in London, Com Laude manages domain name portfolios, protects against brand infringement, and provides strategic guidance on digital identity. The company operates across Asia, Europe, and North America. By adding FairWinds, based in Washington, D.C., Com Laude expands both its reach and its experience. Together, the two firms represent decades of leadership in corporate domain strategy.

FairWinds’ founder, Josh Bourne, who launched the company in 2006, will remain on its board as Director. Bourne has been an outspoken advocate for brand safety and domain strategy, and his continued involvement signals continuity for FairWinds’ existing clients.

Industry Leaders Weigh In

Benjamin Crawford, CEO of Com Laude, described the acquisition as a timely move: “We’re excited to expand our capacity to deliver for companies all over the world in the run-up to the biggest event in internet domain names for 14 years. Adding FairWinds to our group creates a platform that is even better placed to deliver for customers, backed by broad and deep experience from the 2012 round.”

Bourne added that the timing couldn’t be better: “With the impending dotBrand TLD expansion, this is the perfect moment for FairWinds to join forces with an outstanding operator. We look forward to working with Benjamin and the Com Laude team to help deliver great results for our customers.”

The Stakes for 2026

ICANN will open the new application window for dotBrands in April 2026, a full fourteen years after the last round. Companies will have three months to apply. With more brands online than ever before—and digital fraud at record highs—the demand for secure, brand-exclusive domains is expected to be intense. For corporations, this is not just about securing a web address. It is about protecting customer trust and cementing digital identity for decades to come.

The acquisition of FairWinds by Com Laude brings together two industry powerhouses at a pivotal moment. With ICANN’s 2026 application window on the horizon, their combined expertise gives global brands a clear path to securing dotBrand domains. Looking back at how companies like Nike and Sky used their dotBrands after 2012, the lesson is straightforward: the value of trust, control, and consistency cannot be overstated. Brands preparing for 2026 should take note—the clock is ticking, and the next wave of digital identity is about to begin.
