Yahoo Groups Shutting Down December 14, 2019

Yahoo Groups Shutting Down

Yahoo Groups is shutting down. On October 21, 2019 they will lock down Yahoo Groups so that no one can upload any more content. Then, on December 14, 2019, all previously posted content will be removed forever. I have been getting used to Google shutting down services such as Google Plus and Google Bulletin, and even certain Google Groups. But it’s been a while since we’ve seen a Yahoo service being shut down permanently.

Google Groups are still alive and well, and they do get plenty of posts (especially the Google Webmaster group, the Google Webmaster community). Currently there’s only about 5,000 pages indexed in Google (site:groups.yahoo.com search query), and 49,700 pages of Yahoo Groups indexed in Yahoo (site:groups.yahoo.com search query). So, there’s not a whole lot of content indexed.

If you browse the Yahoo Groups, and take a look at the more popular groups, the last activity in many of them is from 2009, 2014, and even November of 2018. So, to me it looks like the present-day social media has taken over, and people aren’t posting on groups anymore. I can’t tell you when the last time I went to Yahoo Groups, it must have been several years.

What Will Happen to Yahoo Groups?

According to the announcement, “The Yahoo Groups site will continue to exist, however, all public groups will be made private or restricted.” If you do have content that you would like to save, I recommend that you download that content and move it somewhere else, such as to a Facebook Group. Hopefully by now you’ve noticed that there isn’t much activity in your Yahoo Group and you’ve moved the Group and members to another platform, such as to Facebook groups.
