Facebook has created a competitor to Google’s AdSense program. The program, Facebook’s Audience Network, allows you to monetize your mobile app or website with ads from Facebook’s 2.5 million Facebook advertisers. [Read more…]
Whitehouse.gov Temporarily Redirects Home Page to HTTPs
The official website of the White House, http://www.whitehouse.gov/, has a temporary redirect (a 302 redirect) set up from the HTTP version of their website to the HTTPs version of their website. You may already know that I’m a big fan of moving your website to a secure version (HTTPs), as I moved this website to HTTPs days after it was announced that HTTPs is a Google search engine ranking factor. But, the White House website is doing it wrong. [Read more…]
Did Virgin America @VirginAmerica Just Slay Santa?
A tweet sent out by Virgin America (@VirginAmerica) appears to be totally inappropriate, although this might be their attempt at getting others to tweet (or write) about their tweet. Virgin America posted a lovely photo of Santa being pulled by the tail of a Virgin America airplane. The moon is also in this photo, as well. The tweet, posted by the official Virgin America account, simply said the following: [Read more…]
Twitter’s Innovative Use of Responsive Web Design
I am not sure if you have noticed, by Twitter has implemented what I would call a very innovative use of responsive web design. Responsive web design is where a website uses the same web design, but literally “changes” in a way that it looks good in any sized web browser–even on a tablet or smart phone.
In the case of Twitter, you can see what I call an innovative use of responsive web design when you resize your web browser. If your browser is more of a “normal” size, meaning that it takes up most of your desktop monitor’s screen, then it will look like this in the top left: [Read more…]
Posting on Social Media Won’t Get You More Fans
In an interesting, eye-opening study that Clickable recently did, they found that if you post more often on social media you won’t necessarily get more fans on social media. Clickable studied the social media accounts of major consumer brands and found that those brands who posted more often never had more social media fans in their industry category. [Read more…]

There are numerous ways that you can use social media to begin and complete the article research process. Here are four: [Read more…]
Why I Can’t Trust Klout Anymore
Klout is a site that measures your influence on the web, using social media sites. Essentially, the more influential you are on social media websites, the higher your Klout score is. The score goes from 1 to 100, and I would say that it’s pretty easy to get a Klout score of 30 or higher. Currently, my Klout score is 66, which is really not that bad if you ask me.

Today, I feel honored to have been asked to participate in my first-ever Reddit AMA (Ask Me Anything). I’ve just kicked it off on the “Big SEO” section of Reddit, and welcome you to come ask me anything: [Read more…]

Facebook Timeline Fails Yet Again
I’m getting increasingly sick and tired of how Facebook’s timeline feed is utterly failing, time and time again. Yes, yet another Facebook Timeline Fail. We really don’t know what we are missing in our Facebook timeline, and this has to take the cake. 23 hours after severe weather and high winds were reported by our local emergency agency, Facebook decided to post their post in my timeline. [Read more…]
Introducing Ello, the New Ad-Free Social Network
Ello is a new social network that has literally exploded onto the social networking scene. It’s in private beta right now, so you’ll need in Invite from someone to get an account. Think Facebook and Twitter combined into one social media network–without all of the ads, retweets, and “likes”. And there’s no algorithm behind their newsfeed or timeline. If someone you’re following or “friends” with posts or says “ello”, then you’ll see it in your feed. [Read more…]
Using SocialCentiv Twitter Marketing Software for Lead Generation
We’ve always thought of Twitter as a social media site to connect with others and see their Tweets. But did you know that there a lots of people on Twitter who are looking for products and services that you may offer? For example, someone might ask their followers about real estate agents in the area. They might need some sort of Twitter marketing software. [Read more…]
How to Get More Clicks and Views of Your Facebook Posts
Yesterday I wrote about how I was really frustrated by Facebook’s news feed, in that Facebook’s algorithm decided to show me breaking news from my local news station nearly two days after the breaking news happened. Well, since Facebook’s algorithm really is what decides which of your friends’ posts (and posts of pages that you’ve liked) you see, Facebook has made some changes to their news feed algorithm. A recent Facebook announcement about the changes they’re making shows us how we can get more clicks and views of our Facebook posts.
Facebook Shows Breaking News in Newsfeed 2 Days After Event Occurs
Thanks, Facebook. Thanks a lot. Thanks for showing breaking news (from a local news station near me) TWO DAYS after the event happened. No, not minutes or even a few hours after the breaking news event happened, but TWO DAYS after the news station posted it to Facebook.
Above, you’ll see the screen capture of what just appeared in my Facebook newsfeed, I use the term ‘newsfeed’ only because that’s what they call it–not that it’s an actual newsfeed in the actual sense of the word. This “breaking news” event, was posted by CBS DFW (a local tv news station that I’ve ‘liked’ on Facebook) on Friday, August 22nd. But Facebook chooses to actually show it to me, in my Facebook newsfeed, roughly 2 days after it occurred. [Read more…]
Twitter to Remove Auto-Promote Ad Functionality
Starting August 22, 2014, Twitter will remove the auto-promote advertising functionality for advertisers. In an email sent out today, Twitter notified their advertisers that the change “will allow advertisers to have more control of their campaigns and to optimize for the best results…” [Read more…]
Cottonelle Social Media Fail
In what appears to be yet another Corporate America social media fail, Cottonelle inappropriately used the viral news that LeBron James is returning to Cleveland to tweet out a message to their followers to use Cottonelle brand toilet paper and flushable wipes.
This is one of those social media “failures” that just goes to show that many large corporations just don’t “get” the use of social media. Most likely, though, the person who tweeted about LeBron James from the Cottonelle Twitter account just doesn’t get social media, either. [Read more…]
How I Got Over 16,000 Tweets of a Blog Post
I have to admit that I am really surprised that I have, naturally, over sixteen thousand tweets and retweets of one of my blog posts. Take a look at the stats on this blog post of mine:
I say, “naturally” because I honestly didn’t do anything to get these extra tweets. There are things you can do to get tweets unnaturally, such as buying tweets on sites like Fiverr.com and soforth. There are “services” where you can literally buy tweets or retweets. But that’s not what happened here. [Read more…]
How to Post Articles on LinkedIn
Since there has been a lot of talk and controversy in the SEO community about guest blogging, and how guest blogging is either dead or not dead, a lot of people have been looking for other platforms where they can post their articles. Well, now there is a great new platform (site) where you can post article: LinkedIn.
Twitter Flags Kanye West Kim Kardashian Wedding Photos as Sensitive Material
Just recently, Kanye West posted photos of his wedding with Kim Kardashian on his Twitter account. These are great photos, and just the typical wedding photos. However, what is kind of odd is that Twitter is flagging these photos as containing “sensitive material”.
Twitter: No Employee Twitter Accounts are Verified Accounts
Last week, I was speaking at the ClickZ Live Toronto conference, and Kirstine Stewart, head of Twitter Canada, was one of the keynote speakers. According to Ms. Stewart, no Twitter accounts of employees are Verified accounts. Not even the CEO’s account. [Read more…]
