6 Ways to Get Nearly Instant Links to your Web Site

It seems as though everyone wants something done quickly, or nearly instantly. We want success quickly. We want to be successful online and we want to get links to our web sites quickly. We want traffic to our web sites quickly.

There are many reasons why you would want to get an “influx” of links to one particular article on your web site. Perhaps it’s a blog post. Perhaps it’s just a new web site and a brand new domain name and you “want to do something” to jumpstart it somehow. I’ve put together a list of six things you can do right now to get nearly “instant links” to your web site. In many cases these six “techniques” of getting links are nearly automated, so your link will show up almost as fast as you can go check to see if it’s really there. Some other techniques I’ve listed below are faster; and some require that you actually create some content (like writing a few blog entries).

I am not making any sort of “guarantees” at all whether or not these work or whether or not they’re completely “white hat”, meaning that if Matt Cutts from Google picks up on it he won’t have problem with it. And I haven’t tested each and every one of these to see if the “links count” at all the search engines. In any case, though, there are legitimate reasons as to why you would want to get a link quickly. One reason I can think of right now is that you need to get a URL crawled quickly; especially when you’re going to syndicate the content on other web sites. Duplicate content can be a real issue nowadays, and it’s important to make sure that the content our site gets crawled first.

Here are fix ways to get nearly instant links to your web site:

1. Submit site to get-listed-quickly directories.

OneMission.com
Sign up as an editor, then add links in appropriate categories. Top level categories are better, make sure that the page is located not too many clicks from their home page: http://onemission.com/

Easy Link Directory
A bid for placement web directory, submit a link to your site and bid to for placement; lowest bid is only $1. Easy Link Directory

2. Add your own blog at a few web sites:

Start a Wordpress blog. Make sure the blog has good unique content, make sure you link out to trusted sites when you post; add tags to posts
http://wordpress.com/

Start a Squidoo Lens on your topic.
http://www.squidoo.com

Start a weather blog at Wunderground.com
Start a blog (choose free option) and
http://www.wunderground.com/blog/

Other places to add your own content:
hubpages.com
zimbio.com

3. Add the link to your social media accounts.

Add a link to your social media accounts that you’ve already set up.
StumbleUpon
Del.icio.us/delicious.com
google.com/bookmarks
wirefan.com’
simpy.com
folkd.com
blogmarks.net
corank.com
megite.com/discover
dropjack.com
a1-webmarks.com
jumpup.intuit.com
spicypages.com

If you have the option available to you, consider adding “link bait” type articles, content to the web site and use the social media sites to help promote that content.

4. Add your site to new social media profiles.
If you plan on using the new social media profile in the future, then it might make sense to set up social media profiles for the site. There’s a good list of social media sites at www.socialposter.com.

5. Check for broken links at Web Directories

Check for broken links. Use a dead link checker to check for sites that are listed in the category where you want to be listed. Sometimes you can find a domain name that is listed (or one that you can buy) and redirect to your site with a 301 Permanent Redirect.
dir.yahoo.com
business.com
dmoz.org

Besides the Yahoo! Directory, Business.com, and DMOZ.org, there are most likely other authoritative sites or in your niche that list sites in your niche. Run a dead link checker script on those pages to find domain names, sites of formerly competitive sites on your topic. Watch out for domain names that have trademarks, don’t register those. Whether or not you actually get credit for those directory links is questionable, though. Once a domain name drops (goes pending delete) and is available, I tend to see them removed from the Google index. If you’re after a directory listing, though, this may be an option if you don’t want to wait or pay for the directory listing fee (some are as much as $299).

Here are a few broken link checker scripts:
Xenu - http://home.snafu.de/tilman/xenulink.html
404 Checker - http://www.404checker.com/link-checker
Dead Links - http://www.dead-links.com/

6. Make useful comments on some dofollow blogs.
There are lists of dofollow blogs (blogs that have removed the “nofollow” tag on their blog comments. Keep in mind that you really DO need to make a useful comment (especially on my blog) because most of these (if not all of them) are moderated. If you want a link from my blog, make a useful comment on a *recent* post, not one from 6 months or a year ago.

Do Follow Blogs - http://www.dofollowblogs.com/
Courtney Tuttle DoFollow blogs - http://courtneytuttle.com/blogs-that-follow/
Link Building Bible - http://linkbuildingbible.com/dofollowdiver/

Like I mentioned before, there are many reasons why you would want to links to a site quickly; and you easily force a search engine crawl of your site by doing any of these things. I tend to prefer to do as many as I can, especially when it comes to a brand new domain name or when I need a link to an article or press release on a site that I know is going to get “syndicated” somewhere. Hopefully this list is helpful. If you know of any other ways to get a link that I haven’t mentioned, feel free to comment about it.

  1. Thank you so much for the helpful tips on building links. I’ve started going through the DoFollow blogs, but it seems to take a while for the site admins to approve posts. One other way is to submit your site to free directories which you can find with a quick google search.

  2. Awesome tip on the Onemission directory, I had never heard of that one. I read so much about linkbuilding that I don’t leave time to actually do it. Its nice to read something that gives easy quick ways to get links. I added three links into onemission in less than 5 minutes. Thanks again

  3. Great tips Bill. These are all techniques that anyone with basic computer skills can do in their spare time. I have to reiterate what faculty said about one mission and easy link directory. I wasn’t aware of either of these services. Thanks for keeping your on the ball.

  4. WoW, by reading through your post, I have learned many useful things that I can apply in the website link building…

By the way, I have never heard about the onemission site either, is it requires any monthly payment?

  5. Bill,
As you probably know, we have been doing link building for years, yet you listed some sites under #3 that I hadn’t heard of yet.

    Good post.

    Arnie

  6. Bill,

I think it’s really worth mentioning that a couple of these link-building tactics can really be done in your own downtime. I’ll be honest: I was going to read some blogs and kill time on StumbleUpon to cool off from work, anyway. Now, my time off is still helping the business. Great post.

  7. Never ceases to amaze me how just when you think you know all of the key social media site, a new list pops up.

    Thanks for links and ideas.

  8. Bill,

“Make useful comments on some dofollow blogs” - Its very good idea for getting targeted links.

I will also think make my blog links Dofollow and get quality comments to my post.

    Good post.

    Arnie

  9. Bill,

Nice post –you mention a few sites that I hadn’t heard of before.

I do have one comment. You say: “make a useful comment on a *recent* post, not one from 6 months or a year ago”.

I understand that some people may be tempted to comment on older posts just because their browser toolbars show a little green line that isn’t yet present on newer posts, I also appreciate that most of the “interesting” comments will already have been made after a few weeks, and I can imagine that you don’t like the idea of constantly having to “police” your entire site.

However, if people visit your site for the first time and like it, they will probably read *several* articles, and they may well want to *comment*, perhaps even on more than one… So I think your “rule” should read: “make a useful comment on a *recent* post, [] *unless* you have a really new, really interesting insight regarding an older one”! :-)

  10. thanks for the post. :) i’ve been trying to read up on ways to secure backlinks to the blogs i set up. you made an interesting point regarding dead links. i think this is the first place i’ve seen that information posted. not quite an option for me yet, as am currently blogging in my spare time, and i don’t yet plan to spend on this, but it’s useful information to have for future purposes.

  11. I found this article on webpronews and found it very useful. I even tried some of what you said on a new website i had built and you were correct. The next day google immediately added my site to their index and yahoo has already found 10 links from the sites you had listed above. Thanks for some real advice this time!

  12. Thanks for the info. I have been trying to promote my website, which is about CB radios, mainly Cobra. I did not even realize many blogs used the “nofollow” tag, so I imagine a lot of my blogging in the past may have not helped my site to be indexed. I am going to try the adding to directory advice you given as well.. The only one I have tried in the past was the DMOZ directory, however DMOZ seems to be the slowest of any though, but have never tried the others you have mentioned.

  13. Bill,

Do you find that the wunderground site gives you much traffic? I was wondering how it comes into play and how to better utilize it.

  14. Andrew, wunderground is a trusted domain name; it’s been around for a long time. I’m not necessarily recommending them for the traffic you get from the site, it’s the “quick link” you can get by creating and posting a blog there on the site. It really helps if you have a weather-related site, I suppose.

  15. Thanks for the advice, I’ve just launched my home restoration site. How can I tell if a blog or site is dofollow or nofollow? Is this part of the SEO plugin for Firefox perhaps?

  16. Great post Bill!

I would add Yelp & Merchant Circle to the list.

  17. Thanks for the tips. The number five tip related to broken links checking is something new for me.

  18. I couldn’t get your point of checking deadlinks ?I suppose you are saying check for broken links in directories and buy the domain name and redirect it to your site? Actually buying a old domain sometimes may cost more than actually getting your site listed newly in a directory …

  19. Lyndall, when you are on the page, go to the top of your toolbar where is says File, Edit, View.. If you are using internet explorer, go to view, and then select “source”. It will open up the whole pages code on a notepad format. I then usually use the ctrl+F function to search for the word “follow”. If you see Dofollow or don’t find the word “follow” at all, this is good, but if it says “nofollow” near a URL, this is bad, and does nothing for your SERP, unfortunately.. A lot of blog site owners will eventually pay for this attribute and attitude, as they’ll notice the amount of unique content and traffic they receive will drop, once this catches on.. The funny thing is, is that these same blog site owners, themselves want a lot of inbound links, and will post on “dofollow” blogs or sites themselves to market their site and do get a higher pagerank. It’s really about greed, in my opinion. I understand if its spam, and or non-relevant and un thought out comment, but if someone takes the time to add beneficial and unique content to help their site rank higher on search engines for the site they are adding content on, and seems only fair that they would allow the inbound link to follow. Think about it, you writing at times a small article of unique content for them, each time you write out a though out comment. Contrary to belief, a site does not lose pagerank or rankings by posting outbound links.. Google likes sites that spider out, and out penalize spam sites that do this. I think they just don’t want any sites to benefit from receiving the benefit of getting inbound links, although their site itself is highly benefiting from such inbound links from bloging, forums, articles, and related sites. This is one of the reasons why I will be using this blog, and stopped using many others.. This blog has both useful content, and does not have the “nofollow” attribute attitude.. HOwever, if someone is just spamming, and leaving a 1 sentence comment, I do consider this spam, and I don’t think these comments are adding any value, nor should dofollow or their links be allowed..

  20. First of all, I’d like to thank you for giving a valuable tips on SEO and link building. Secondly, thanks for being a dofollow blog.

  21. Just wanted to say thanks for the post… and also thanks for informing me of OneMission.com. I have used the other methods in your article before. Some with good results.. others not so much. Now I am going to test out OneMission and see what thats all about.

    Greatly appreciated.

  22. Thanks for the advice, I’ve just launched my site on Organice Gardening Tips. How can I tell if a blog or site is nofollow? A friend told me to download a firefox plugin! I think this might help me somehow.

  23. I have already tried one or two things mentioned in your list and they have worked very well in getting traffic. I will try out the rest also so that i can increase the traffic as the traffic is slow. I am not getting it as i am expecting it.

  24. Great post. And I can attest to at least three of the methods working beautifully (number two, three and six). I’d also add to number two that there are places you can write articles that, if you keep them slightly different from the post and link back to your blog, can get you a lot of SEO juice right away (ezine articles in particular - they have strict rules, though).

For anyone getting into the game, this is great information. Keep up the good work!

  25. Thanks for your article I happened to stumble upon it ( pardon the pun ) while i was doing more seo research.

Onto the Google duplicate content stuff. What if your take on many sites such as technorati and such having this with many backward and inbound links with good PR from google to it.
    1. Do you think they are not being penalized do to being such a big site or authority?
    2. Or do you think it has to do with so many in bound links from OTHER resources ( outbound) and that is why all is well and they still have awesome PR.
    3. Other factors.

Would love to hear your opinion.

  26. Wow I am really excited about this post. there’s asome great ideas here that i have not heard yet. Thanks Bill.

  27. It seems like digg and del.icio.us are becoming less and less approachable though. The popular articles are again and again posted by the same group of people, how can you break through all that and actually get your article viewed?

  28. i knew most of them, but onemission and easy link directory..ive never heard of these 2! Thanks for sharing

  29. jessica rose -

there is indeed a plugin that will tell you if a link is nofollow or not, it is called seo for firefox (check tools.seobook.com to get it), but you can also just look at the page’s source and examine the href tag. if is has a nofollow in it, there you go.

  30. Thank you for giving a valuable tips on SEO and link building. My friends would love to see this!

  31. Thanks for bringing all this stuff in one short list. But I have one correction - these actions are definitely good for english site, but not all this actions could be applied to non-english site (russian language, for example).

  32. Very helpful post, thank you. WIthout some good, quick backlinks as you suggest, I’ve seen it take three weeks or more for Google to re-index smaller sites after a redesign or even significant content updates. Anything that helps accelerate that process enables SEO clients to see results more quickly — good for them, and for their SEO provider (but bad for SEO charlatans who have no real results to show!).

  33. nice tips. i’ve had fan sites since 1999 but just started doing all the SEO and stuff for ‘em. now i’m braching out to different topics instead of celebrity and your tips definitely help. getting links isn’t as easy as it used to be in the old Web 1.0 days when everybody was linking with everybody. now it’s like you have to go out and pull teeth.

  34. Fantastic list Bill. The biggest thing anyone can do is just get started building links. It’s not hard but obviously takes time and energy to get it done. Even by just doing what you prescribe, most people would be able to get their sites off the ground much faster. One thing I do, which takes a bit more time, is actually scrub those lists of DoFollow blogs to see which ones are still following. It takes a bit more time, but if you’re trying to get useful links, why waste your time with nofollow links right?

  35. Thanks a lot for these link building tips. I was aware of some of the techniques but a couple of them are new to me and look very interesting. But I am a bit confused about the ‘Add your own blog at a few web sites’ suggestion. Do you mean I need to make a new blog at these sites and then add a link to my main site? Thanks for the help! :)

  36. Great advice, using a combination of Wordpress blog and ping with submission to a few of the top social networking sites I’ve been able to get new pages indexed within hours.

Also, creating a quick YouTube video and linking back to a relevant page in the description of the video works quite well.

List of blogs with do follow was very valuable, hadn’t come across those before.

    Thanks,

    Jeff

  37. Great post. It’s nice to see that you also have a call to action that promotes your skills.

Additional tips for those that market to non-English speaking customers:
    - it is often easier and more beneficial to get quality links from directories and portals that cater to specific languages
    - write articles in the language of your target audience but include English keyword equivalents throughout so that you get picked up by both the niche and the big search engines

  38. I do, which takes a bit more time, is actually scrub those lists of DoFollow blogs to see which ones are still following. It takes a bit more time, but if you’re trying to get useful links, why waste your time with nofollow links right?

  39. Thank you for your tips, i didn’t know about onemission.com and Wunderground.

  40. oh really nice article i also remember posting an article like this on my blog it was more about instant traffic. in which i also included publicizing your blog locally and many other tricks i dont know if posting link in comment section is allowed here so better keep it secret. i really like your blog

  41. I think it’s really worth mentioning that a couple of these link-building tactics can really be done in your own downtime. I’ll be honest: I was going to read some blogs and kill time on StumbleUpon to cool off from work, anyway. Now, my time off is still helping the business. Great post.

  42. Great post Bill!! An other fast way to get nearly instant links is yahoo answer. In the source box of the answers you give, you can add a link to your site. Give quality answers and avoid pasting your sites address on every answer you give or your account will be banned. I only post links to my sites in about 1 out of every 8-10 answers I give. It seems to work…

  43. Thank you for the immediate link building help. It is harder than most people seem to realize to get quality back links without having to give a reciprocal link.

  44. Thanks for the great leads. The list of “do-follow” blogs is especially useful and I’ve never heard of thought about the broken links via Yahoo. I already have Zenu installed but have only used it on my own sites. The Internet is endlessly fascinating because you never know what you’re going to stumble across just out surfing - like these cool ideas.

  45. thanks Bill for the post on tips for link building…some new ones here for me, and thanks to Cobra CB for the explanation of checking DoFollow, I have always wondered how to check, and now I know.

  46. What are the other jobs of SEO along with back linking . I want to know . SEO is a big field. I am interested in it.
