Google Launches .NEW Domains as Shortcuts

Posted on October 25, 2018 Written by Bill Hartzer

domaintest.new

Google has launched some new websites that are essentially shortcuts for starting a new Google doc. Instead of going to Google Drive to create a new spreadsheet, slide, document, or form, you can use a .NEW domain name to immediately create one. For example, if you type sheet.new into your web browser, it will create a new spreadsheet in Google Docs. Here are the new domains that will create new docs:

form.new
forms.net
sheet.new
sheets.new
spreadsheet.new
site.new
sites.new
website.new
slide.new
slides.new
deck.new
presentation.new
doc.new
documents.new

These are a great use of their new gTLD, Google owns and operates the .NEW registry. .new was delegated to the Root Zone of the DNS on the 30th August, 2014, but it took Google 4 years to finally make use of the .NEW gTLD.

Currently there are only 4 domain names indexed in Google: you can use the site:.new search query to see them:

forms.new
tick.new
slides.new
domaintest.new

I don’t know what the domaintest.new site is, although it’s just got a holding page there right now.

And Blake pointed out on Twitter, putting www in front of any of these domain names leads to an SSL error: which they should have taken care of. I mean, shouldn’t Google know to set up a 301 redirect from www to non-www?

tick.new brings you to a sign-in page which appears to be only for Google employees, as it wants you to sign in with your @google.com email address. I suspect that this is only for those with an @google.com email address. Do you think they should stop Google from indexing those pages and that domain?
