Bill Hartzer Discusses SEO and Domain Value on the Clarity Digital Podcast

Posted on January 23, 2025 Written by Bill Hartzer

Clarity Digital Podcast with Bill Hartzer

I recently had the privilege of joining Al Sefati on the Clarity Digital Podcast to discuss some of my favorite topics: the evolution of SEO, the value of domain names, and the challenges businesses face when managing their digital assets. Drawing from over 20 years of experience in the industry, I shared insights and strategies that I’ve developed throughout my career, along with some of the lessons I’ve learned along the way.

My Journey from Webmaster to SEO Specialist

My career began in the 1990s as a webmaster for an international telecom software company. Back then, search engines were still in their infancy, but foundational SEO principles like optimizing keywords and crafting meta descriptions were already making an impact. Managing multilingual websites and internal intranets gave me hands-on experience that has shaped how I approach SEO today.

When I transitioned to the agency world, I had the chance to work across various industries, diving into content creation, affiliate marketing, and domain name management. In 2016, I decided to start my own agency, focusing on helping clients navigate the technical and strategic aspects of SEO and domain management.

Why Domain Names Still Matter

One of the key points I emphasized on the podcast was the enduring importance of domain names, particularly “.com” extensions. Even with the rise of newer domain extensions, “.com” remains the gold standard for businesses that want to establish credibility and trust. I’ve also seen a shift in markets like the UK, where businesses historically used “.co.uk” domains, but are now gravitating toward “.com” for its global appeal.

I shared how I use tools like Pitchbox to identify potential buyers for domain names, set up targeted email campaigns, and close sales efficiently. One of my favorite examples was selling a domain name in just 30 minutes by reaching the right audience at the right time.

The Growing Market for Expired Domains

Expired domains are a fascinating niche in the digital world. On the podcast, I talked about how domains with strong backlinks and SEO value can sell for thousands of dollars, even if the domain name itself isn’t inherently valuable. However, I also warned about the risks involved, such as legal issues that can arise when an expired domain is misused.

I shared a story about a business that let its domain expire, only to have it purchased by a third party who created a fake website filled with gambling links. This situation highlighted the importance of proactive domain management to avoid reputational and legal troubles.

Navigating Legal and Ethical Challenges

As someone who has served as an expert witness in internet-related legal cases, I’ve seen firsthand how domain mismanagement can lead to costly disputes. I recounted cases involving stolen domains, unauthorized transfers, and even businesses losing their domains due to expired credit cards linked to auto-renewal systems.

I also touched on the legal challenges surrounding expired domains and AI-generated content. Businesses repurposing expired domains need to be cautious about copyright and intellectual property rights. Similarly, AI tools can be incredibly useful for content creation, but they come with their own set of legal and ethical concerns.

My Tips for Proactive Domain Management

To help businesses avoid common pitfalls, I shared some practical advice during the podcast:

  • Enable Auto-Renewal: Make sure your domains are set to auto-renew, and keep payment information up to date.
  • Use Two-Factor Authentication: Protect your domain accounts with 2FA to prevent unauthorized access.
  • Limit Account Access: Restrict domain account access to only essential personnel.
  • Consider Domain Blocking Services: Tools like Name Block can prevent unauthorized registrations of variations of your domain name.
  • Avoid Whois Privacy for Businesses: Displaying accurate contact information can simplify domain recovery in case of disputes.

In the podcast, I encouraged businesses to think of domain names as valuable assets, much like real estate. By staying proactive and informed, companies can secure their online presence and navigate the ever-changing landscape of SEO with confidence.
