AI-Driven Job Search: Men Lead the Charge in Using Technology for Career Advancement

Posted on August 2, 2024 Written by Bill Hartzer

A recent survey by Enhancv has revealed striking trends in how job seekers are leveraging artificial intelligence (AI) to enhance their resumes and job search strategies. The study, which surveyed 600 job seekers and analyzed over 26,000 resumes, highlights a significant gender divide in the adoption of AI tools, with men notably outpacing women in embracing this technology.

Men Embrace AI for Job Searches: Key Findings

According to the Enhancv survey, men are 35% more likely than women to use AI to write their resumes. The data shows that 61% of men have used AI for this purpose, compared to 45% of women. Furthermore, men are 81% more likely to use AI to complete recruitment tasks and 34% more likely to use AI to answer interview questions.

Enhancv’s Executive Coach, Silvia Angeloro, attributes this disparity to traditional gender roles, stating, “Men often have fewer responsibilities related to childcare and household chores, allowing them to focus more on their careers and leverage AI tools effectively.”

  • Men are 81% more likely than women to use AI to complete recruitment tasks.
  • Men are 34% more likely than women to use AI to answer interview questions.
  • Men are 23% more likely than women to be comfortable using AI during a job search.
  • Men and women are equally likely to believe using AI during a job search is ethical.
  • Workers in the IT, and Professional and Business Services sectors are the most likely to use AI to write their resumes.
  • California and Texas are hotspots for job seeker AI use.
  • Older workers and younger workers are equally likely to use AI to write their resumes.

Comfort and Ethics in Using AI

The survey found that men are not only more likely to use AI but also more comfortable with it. About 74% of men reported feeling comfortable or very comfortable using AI in their job search, compared to 60% of women. Despite these differences, both genders view the use of AI as ethical, with 81% of men and 80% of women agreeing on its ethicality.

Industry and Geographical Trends

The adoption of AI tools is particularly prevalent in the IT and Professional and Business Services sectors. The survey revealed that 3,080 users in Professional Services and 2,367 in IT utilized Enhancv’s AI tools. Conversely, blue-collar jobs showed minimal AI usage, with only 234 retail workers and a handful from manufacturing and transportation sectors using AI.

Geographically, California and Texas emerged as hotspots for AI use among job seekers. These states not only have large populations but are also home to major tech hubs, further driving the adoption of AI in job searches.

Age and Technology Adoption

Contrary to the stereotype that older workers are less tech-savvy, the survey found that older and younger workers are equally likely to use AI for their resumes. 45% of respondents aged 50–59 used AI, the same percentage as those aged 20–29.

Insights from Industry Experts

Angeloro emphasizes the benefits of using AI but also advises job seekers to add a personal touch to their applications. “After using AI, review and personalize your application to ensure it reflects your unique qualities. The goal is to showcase your fit for the role and let your individuality stand out.”

The Enhancv survey underscores the growing role of AI in the job search process and highlights a gender divide in its adoption. With AI tools becoming increasingly sophisticated, job seekers—particularly men—are harnessing this technology to gain a competitive edge. However, as Angeloro points out, the human element remains crucial in making a lasting impression.
