Yandex

Yandex, the most popular Russian internet search engine, has been named a 2008 Technology Pioneer by the World Economic Forum. The World Economic Forum will hold its annual meeting in January 2008 in Davos, Switzerland.

Russia is one of the largest and fastest-growing internet markets in the world with over 28 million internet users. Russia is fairly unique because it is one of the countries where a local search engine has remained the top search engine (in many countries Google is the top search engine). Yadex’s market share is currently about 55 percent of the Russian internet search engine market.

Yandex was named a 2008 Technology Pioneer by the World Economic Forum because it was selected from a field of 273 nominees from a number of industries, including energy, the environment, biotechnology, health and information technology. Past winners of the “Technology Pioneer” award in the IT category include Google, Mozilla, and Encore Software.

google will sure over take the russian search engine also one day, but its good to see a country’s local search engine leading the search, that way i feel the search gets more targeted,
