Top 50 USA Web Properties for April 2009
![]()
comScore, Inc. (NASDAQ: SCOR), a leader in measuring the digital world, has released its monthly list of consumer activity on the top 50 web properties in the USA. They do this every month, and it’s based on data from their comScore Media Metrix service.
Some of the most notable drivers of traffic to certain websites include the swine flu concerns that people had (i.e., www.cdc.gov), and the rise in popularity of Twitter and Facebook. Apparently since Spring is here now we’re also going to home improvement related websites. April 2009 also saw an increase to tax-related websites, mainly because of the April 15 tax deadline in the USA.
Google’s web properties continued to be the most visited web properties in April 2009, with more than 155 million visitors, followed by Yahoo! with 149 million visitors and Microsoft with 126.5 million visitors. Facebook.com climbed one spot in the ranking to number eight on the list with 67.5 million visitors.

I am actually kind of surprised about how much change we’re seeing chinaontv.com and WWE, I know that WWE is popular, but how is it that increased that much from March 2009 to April 2009? Can someone enlighten me? Was there some new event going on?

I was very interested to see the 12% increase in social networking – I wonder whether it’s due to people having more time on their hands as more and more people are losing their jobs?
You noted the increase in visitors to tax related websites due to the filing deadline, but the category also includes business & finance. I do wonder whether this also reflects people’s desire to make more money either online or working from home and therefore looking for more information online? I live in Tenerife, Spain, where the unemployment figure is shooting up at the moment as tourists aren’t spending cash anymore. There is definitely much more interest in working from home opportunities now than there was a year ago here.

If “swine flu” is one of the biggest site drivers right now. I would actually be really curious to see how “H1N1″ ranks, and how “Mexican flu” ranks. Additionally, I am somewhat curious to know what sort of ads these terms would attract to a site. Just because a term may draw traffic, does not automatically mean it is attracting quality traffic.

For WWE, I’ve checked their site, and I didn’t find any upcoming event news. Even I never like WWE but you know many people out there love to watch them. They have high popularity level and always increase time by time. Maybe this will be a good reason for that. but who knows…..
