I pulled the entire list of the expired domain names for the next five days from Namejet’s downloads and analyzed the list. I used a few tools like Majestic’s bulk backlink analysis tool, as well as AI to filter out the “bad” domain names, and focused only on the top domain names based on Majestic’s Trust Flow (similar but more accurate because Citation Flow is also involved).
After processing the entire list, I sorted it by Trust Flow to get the top 500 domains based on Trust Flow. I had an AI process the spreadsheet of expired domains, scored each one on authority and cleanliness, and produced two deliverables:
- Best 2–3 domains per topic so you can shop inside your niche
- Global Top 25 across all topics if you just want the absolute strongest plays
The scoring system heavily rewarded high Trust Flow, low Citation Flow, and a strong TF/CF ratio. It also credited breadth of referring domains and raw backlinks, but with diminishing returns. The cleanest profiles in this dataset posted TF/CF ratios of 9.0–9.5, which is unusually strong for expired names and typically signals low noise and high-quality historical links.
How They Were Ranked (and the exact math)
Key inputs
- Trust Flow (TF): a proxy for link quality and topical authority
- Citation Flow (CF): a proxy for link quantity; higher CF without TF usually means noise
- TF/CF Ratio: a fast proxy for link profile cleanliness
- Referring Domains and Backlinks: breadth and depth signals, log-scaled to avoid overweighting spammy volume
Scoring formula
quality_score = 2*TF
+ 10*((TF+1)/(CF+1))
+ 1.5*log(1 + Referring Domains)
+ 0.5*log(1 + Backlinks)
- 0.5*CF
Why this works
- The multiplier on the TF/CF ratio strongly favors domains with genuine authority and low bloat
- TF is doubled to keep pure authority in the driver’s seat
- Referring domains and backlinks are log-transformed so one giant link farm doesn’t dominate
- CF is lightly penalized to keep noisy profiles from creeping up the list
What you still need to check before you buy
- Anchor text profile: look for casino, pills, adult, or foreign-language anchors that don’t match your target niche
- Historic content and ownership: confirm the historical use in Wayback and the ownership/redirect history
- Index status: make sure the domain isn’t currently deindexed or carrying a manual action
- Link concentration: avoid domains where 60–80% of links come from a single referring domain or network
- Topical match: even a pristine domain can be the wrong fit if the historical topic doesn’t align with the project you plan to build

Backordering Domain Names
There are a few ways to place a backorder on any of the domain names that you are interested in acquiring. Backorders can be placed on any of these domain names using Catches.IO, NameJet.com, and DropCatch.com. You could just wait to see if the domain name is available to register, but since others are also doing their own analysis (and others will see this post), then you may want to place a backorder instead of just waiting to see if it becomes available.
