I have come across may sites with high ranking domain names full of ads. As you said they may be ad parking pages. Care must be taken to created custom error pages so as to avoid this exploitation. And in those custom error pages we can place our affiliate links so that we can earn from those error pages.

I can see why they do it though. Think of how much money a semi large web company could make a day on ads like this? It’s just easy money.

I caught my webhost doing this and came up with a simple solution which works well for me – put an opt-in for a free excerpt from my book. That way if people were trying to type in direct URLs to get to my download page (which is well protected) I’ll try to convert them into a paying customer on my email list.

I am pretty sure that this ads page issue is described in user agreement. Just no one cares about reading it thoroughly. Web hosting companies tend to maximize their profit – and this is common practice.

I think it is wrong on both accounts personally, but you are right the responsibility is on the web hosting.

I am really shocked this is being executed. Where are is the protection for the website owners?
