Yeah it really feels bad when your targeted domain name is already taken and the site is not that really active. So I find an alternative way, I used a hyphen in my preferred domain name instead.

Michael, that used to be true for Google, but Google now has the ability to read keywords in the domain name. So now they CAN read myrealestatewebsite.com as "my real estate website". Google wasn't able to do that in the past, but now they can.

What is not generally known about domains is that in most cases a domain strung together withou dashes in not readible by google. eg myrealestatewebsite.com would not be readable but my-real-estate-website.com would be readable by google

What I often find helpful is when you try to search for a domain name, if it is not available the hosting site will suggest you other similar ones. I have been able to find some good domain names this way.
Recently I was talking to a friend whom is a host provider, he told me about a huge scam going on with domain renewals. Thus I just wanted to share so that no one out there becomes a victim.
Basically what happens is that you get a letter through the mail telling you that your domain has expired and you need to renew it. You send your check in and have it renewed, however what you don't know, is that somewhere in the fine print of the agreement you are transferring the rights of your domain to another provider. This provider then becomes the owner of your site. My friend has seen it done to non profit organization websites too..cruel cruel. Be careful!

Thanks, but selection is not on our sole discretion, rather is defendant more on availability of a good domain name. I think so.

Interesting post, I guess I had never really thought that the domain name was quite so important. I also didnt realize there were people out there stupid enough to just type in toys.com. I wonder if having the word photography in my domain name helps at all, or if it would only help if i had it hyphenated.

It is not that difficult to be successful on internet. As long as you are knowledgeable in link building and willing to learn new techniques, then you will survive. Always provide fresh content updates in your site, to have lots of visitors.

Typically no hyphen is worth more when selling based of domain name alone.
Either way i think it]s better if is posible to register both!
I would say that both can get great rankings when done right, and each affects SEO differant...

No hypen, google sees as a better chance it's an official site for those search terms. Thus boosts your PR
With hypen google can read the keywords better in the url and will boost your SEO for that.

Bido is good if you have the patience. They don't have many domains at auction at once. I prefer Sedo's marketplace as there are literally hundreds fo thousands of domains on the market.
