Matt, thanks for pointing out that page on the site. Turns out that it's speakerlawfirm.com/blog.html and not speakerlawfirm.com/blog. Anyhow, I ran that page through copyscape (www.copyscape.com) and the results are very very interesting. Some of that content also happens to appear on the USA Today site.

Regurgitating web content in an effort to "game" the search engines is not something that I advocate. There are much better ways to create content on a web site. Tell me this: would you find that content on that page useful? Would you bookmark it and use it as a news source? Probably not. I certainly wouldn't.

I have a question-- Andrew Speaker had a blog on his firms website that has a pretty gruesome fascination with fatal car accidents. It's been pulled, but take a look at the google cache for speakerlawfirm.com/blog. Does he have some kind of weird psychopathic hobby to write these, or is this some kind of automated search engine optimisation?

((It turns out that this is getting to be a very long post, so I thought I would make and updated comment here instead of adding it to the original post.))

Let's forget, for a moment, about Andrew Speaker. Here you have something that is essentially "the top news story", which is driving a lot of publicity (good or bad) suddenly to a site. The webmaster and the marketer must do what they can--very quickly--to react to this, in order to take full advantage of the publicity.

Furthermore, it's important make sure that one keeps on top of what's being mentioned online. So, some sort of "online reputation management" is good to have, as well. That's as easy as setting up some Yahoo! Alerts and Google Alerts for your company name or perhaps your own name.

Thanks, Passer By, for mentioning the site at www.speakerlawfirm.com. Too bad that that site doesn't rank very well for "andrew speaker". Furthermore, it doesn't seem very logical to have a separate "micro site" hosted on a subdomain. Perhaps the subdomain on the poweradvocates domain should be set up with a 301 Permanent Redirect to the real site.

If there are bandwidth issues, then the page that shows up first in the rankings for "Andrew Speaker" on Google should be redirected with a 301 Permanent Redirect to the main site.

Bill:

All excellent points. One note it does appear as if The Speaker Law Firm has a website up at www.speakerlawfirm.com.

Cheers.
